In 1984, the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli discovered Number Place and introduced it to Japanese audiences. They made several crucial changes:

1. The Name Nikoli called it "Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru" (数字は独身に限る), meaning "the digits must be single" or "the numbers must occur only once." This was shortened to "Sudoku" (数独).

2. Refined Rules Nikoli established that:

  • Each puzzle should have exactly one solution
  • Minimal clues (no unnecessary given digits)

3. Handcrafted Puzzles Unlike computer-generated puzzles, Nikoli insisted on human-created puzzles, believing they had more character and elegance.

In November 2004, Gould convinced The Times of London to publish Sudoku puzzles. The paper introduced it with the headline "No maths needed."
